New Zealand Development Tour

The New Zealand Development Tour is a unique and exciting opportunity for LAQ registered athletes in the U14 and U15 age groups. Each year, a team of up to 30 athletes travels together for around 10–12 days across the South Island of New Zealand, training, competing, and experiencing life in a team environment, something rare in an individual sport like athletics.

Eligibility

Open to U14 and U15 athletes who are fully registered with LAQ.
Applicants must nominate to be considered - selection is not automatic.

Selection Criteria

If more than 30 nominations are received, LAQ will consider:

Behaviour and sportsmanship at Centre, Region, and State events
A balance of male and female athletes
Ongoing commitment to Little Athletics
Length of time involved in Little Athletics
Preference may be given to U15 athletes, as U14s can apply again the following year

Please note: previous selection in a State Team or Development Tour does not guarantee selection.

Nominations for the 2026 Tour are now open!

The tour will take place from Saturday 10th – Monday 19th January. Athletes will spend 10 days training and competing in Christchurch and Nelson.
